A taxi driver in Portsmouth picked up a bumper payday after a man jumped in his cab and asked him to drive to Germany.

54-year-old cabbie Mick Hogan was waiting at a rank in Portsmouth when a customer got in and asked to be driven 740 miles to the Munich Beer Festival, reports the Daily Telegraph. He had missed his flight for a friend’s stag weekend.

Mr Hogan told the customer it would cost £1,700 for the impromptu trip and a further £250 for the channel crossing and one night in a Munich hotel.

With the fare agreed, Hogan went home to pick up a change of clothes before setting off to Germany via France, Belgium and Luxembourg. He eventually arrived in Munich 17 hours after he set off.
