  • Last of the V Bombers

Thousands of people turned out to see a Cold War bomber's first flight at an airshow in 15 years. The Vulcan, which cost £7m to restore, flew in a five minute display at The RAF Waddington International Air Show

About 125,000 people turned out to see the Vulcan's milestone flight. Some 20,000 people have contributed to the restoration fund for the bomber. A total of £2.7m funding also came from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Pilot David Thomas said it was hard work flying the Vulcan. He said: "The cockpit is very small and gets very, very hot so by the time I've done that five minute display, I'm really covered in sweat."

As well as the RAF Waddington show, the Vulcan has been given the green light to take part in the Royal International Air Tattoo in Fairford, Gloucestershire, and the Farnborough airshow in Hampshire.

Dr Robert Pleming, from the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, said: "I feel so proud.

"Of course this is a massive team effort, not only my own relatively small team but all the companies around the UK and the tens of thousands of the public who have supported us.”It really is the people's aircraft." The Vulcan was restored over a 15-year period in Bruntingthorpe but RAF Waddington was its home when it was operational.

Earlier this year, the aircraft passed its first inspection - equivalent to an MOT for planes - at the airfield where it has been kept since being decommissioned in 1993.

Designed in 1948 by Roy Chadwick, the aircraft could travel at speeds of up to 645mph and was capable of carrying nuclear bombs.

There were 134 Vulcan’s built and the plane also saw action during the Falklands conflict. It was later used as an air-to-air refuelling aircraft.

I saw the Vulcan on one of its last flights while I was at RAF Bruggen in 1992; it was an awesome aircraft the last of the V bombers. We have a Vulcan on the ground at Southend airport, although not airworthy it still looks a great aircraft.

  • Rain, Rain Go Away

The rain has finally arrived in the east of the country, it has become rather cold and et here in Essex, scuppering plans to go with my camera to see if I could capture any interesting pictures.

Well that’s life, it seems ages since we had any wet weather in this area, so suppose it was due, at least the gardens will be glad of it (they always say that don’t they). I am sure I can find something to do indoors. There's always the tennis to watch, if it isn't rained off.

  • Wimbledon Champion

We have a Wimbledon Champion, not a headline we expected to see. Even so Laura Robson at the sprightly age of 14 has become Junior Wimbledon champion. Un-seeded and given a wildcard entry it was far more than she expected at the start of the Championships two weeks ago. I actually watched a fair bit of the final yesterday and she did really well. But let’s give her room to mature and improve before we elevate to the ranks of senior women’s champion but she is a hope for the future.

She could be a great role model for all kids of her age well; she has shown great dedication and spirit great attributes for someone of her age.

    Congratulations and well done Laura!

  • To Bee or Not to Bee

    Bee

I didn’t get to go to the RSPB site yesterday as planned, I had a little bit if a gippy stomach and thought it wasn’t a good idea to be miles away from the nearest toilet when I needed it. So after a quick trip to the shops with Caz, I just headed down to the local park.

I did however, manage to shot a few bees, while not as good as I would have liked are not too bad. I had the wrong setting on the camera and the depth of field is all wrong. But I will give it another try today.

  • Up and About

I have just managed to drag my carcass out of my bed, it’s has been a great lay in. I could have just as easily have turned over one more time and stayed in bed for a couple more hours. But I do have a few things I need to do around the house.

I have just put the kettle on while I tap away here, so I swill soon have a lovely a cup of coffee while I browse around and see what people have but on .
