  • Qantus

Passenger on a Qantus flight from London to Melbourne had a lucky escape when they plane suffered damage and q huge hole appeared in the fuselage. The hole about 2.5m in diameter was just forward of the starboard wing and led to pressurisation problems in the aircraft.

Passengers described hearing a large bang and feeling a rush of wind and debris through the cabin about an hour after Flight QF30 left Hong Kong at 0900 local time (0100 GMT).  The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the aircraft made an emergency descent from 29,000ft to 10,000ft.

Passenger Olivia Lucas told the BBC everyone was "pretty scared for a few moments".

"Then everyone focused on getting their oxygen masks on," she said. "Everyone was calm and quiet and there was notable relief when we landed. Everyone applauded the pilot."

"We are very lucky we landed safely and no-one was hurt."

Phill Restall, from the UK, was woken "with a jolt" by the loud bang before the plane descended rapidly.

"No-one panicked, there was no screaming. It wasn't your typical television movie," he told the BBC News website.

"Everyone listened to the cabin staff."

He said other passengers had told him young children in the main cabin were crying.  The pilot did pretty well too, definitely earned his pay this month!

  • Its So Quiet

You can tell its Friday the office is once like a morgue very few people are in today and those that are spending their time like browsing the net and blogging like me. In my defence I have spent the last 2 hours stood up at a drawing board, so I have sat down for a rest and well earned cold drink.

But I have another few hours to spend on my feet before I will be finished for the day, it just can’t come fast enough.

  • Going Up in Smoke

I am not a smoker but I think this going too far, I found this article on the MSN website:

A painter and decorator who received a £30 fine for smoking in his own van has warned that British civil liberties are "going up in smoke". Gordon Williams, 58, of Llanafan, near Aberystwyth, west Wales, was on the way to buy tea bags for his wife when he was slapped with a fixed penalty fine.

A passenger in his van, who had also just lit up, received a £30 on-the-spot fixed penalty notice under the new anti-smoking laws as well. But the self-employed painter and decorator hit out claiming the fine was unjustified and unfair because his van is a private vehicle. He has lodged an appeal with Ceredigion County Council and claims Britain is sleepwalking into a "Big Brother-style" society.

The blue Suzuki van belonging to Mr Williams was undergoing a routine check by police in Llanbadarn Fawr, outside Aberystwyth, earlier this month. The married grandfather had just lit up when a Ceredigion County Council official approached him and dished out the on-the-spot fine. He said: "I was just having a cigarette and causing no bother to anyone else. But this is like Big Brother is watching you."

A spokesman for the council said: "It would be inappropriate for Ceredigion County Council to comment on individual cases.

"The legislation allows for a right of appeal and the procedures in relation to this are set out in the notices."

  • Fire

About two years we had a year block of blocks constructed about ½ mile from where we live. The flats about 50 in all were constructed mainly of wood over a traditional steel frame. Last night these flats were completely destroyed in a major fire. The fire started on the roof balcony and quickly spread throughout the building.

First thoughts by the fire service say it may have been a discarded cigarette or even the remains of someone bar-b-q. I thought that the wood used in construction of building had to specially treated to prevent fire. It makes one wonder how many of these types of blocks are around the country, I know of two more blocks in the Southend area.

It a wonder that someone didn’t die in the blaze, but now 50 people are homeless. I would be very reluctant to live if a wooden structure, look what happened in the Great Fire of London, you would have thought we would have learnt by now, wood burns.

  • Humiliated

Labour has been well and truly stuffed in what has said to be the biggest shock in political history. The Glasgow by-election has been won by the SNP who over came a labour majority of 13,507 to win by a 365, it was a swing of 22.54%. Glasgow East was considered Labour safest seat, one it has held since the Labour party came into existence.

A number of voters interviewed said that while normally they vote for Labour this was protest vote, a warning to Brown to get his act together. I wonder if he will take notice? Analysts have said that they doubt he will stand down, but the question is will someone make him stand down.

The Tories and Lib Dems can’t celebrate either, they only polled 1,639 and 937 respectively so not a great night for them either.

  • Friday

Well here we are once again, the best day of the week, the day the majority of the working public look forward too. I say the majority because there are of course some unlucky people who will have to work this weekend.

It’s been a bit of a strange week at work, one minute nothing to do next minute running around like a headless chicken. I prefer to have a steady work flow, |I hate it when there is bugger all to do, the days drag and you spend your time wondering if there is something better out there to which you would be far happier. Then there’s the other side of coin where it’s none stop all day long and at the end of the day you don’t seem to have accomplished anything.

Still the important thing it that its Friday and in a few a short hours I’ll be able to disappear home for a well deserved rest.
