  • Democracy in Zimbabwe

The following news article has just been posted on the BBC’s website; it shows Zimbabwe’s democracy at it’s finest.  Zimbabwe's authorities have banned several opposition rallies ahead of the 27 June presidential elections. The order came after police briefly detained opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai ahead of a rally in the second largest city of Bulawayo.

The Movement for Democratic Change cited a police letter that said "several future public rallies" were to be banned because of security fears.

The MDC accuses President Robert Mugabe's supporters of intimidation.

The MDC says the rally ban is "rank madness" as the meetings are its only way to communicate with supporters.

Mr Tsvangirai was detained for several hours on Friday - the second such incident this week. Zimbabwe's information minister refused to comment.

  • POETS DAY

45 minutes to lift off, and I have to suffer the trial and tribulations of the Dartford Crossing and the M25. At least it will mean that I will be on my way home. Anyway from my viewpoint at the moment the traffic doesn’t look too bad. Although the weather’s not looking to good at the Moment, its very humid and the sky looks dark and threatening.

Its very quiet at the moment in the office I think most people have decided that’s it’s a poets day and headed home, and who can blame them. I hope to join very soon.

  • Brazilian Prison

The posh lifestyle of a Brazilian convict came to an abrupt end after police confiscated a plasma television, two guns, gym equipment and the equivalent of $173,000 in cash from his cell.

Jose Francisco Leite of the Prison Affairs Department raided the cell of Genilson Lins da Silva as part of a state-wide crackdown on drug traffickers.

An investigation has been ordered to find out how Silva, who is serving 28 years for robbery and murder, got 280,000 real’s (approx $173,000), two .38-caliber pistols and various other amenities into his cell at the Lemos Brito Penitentiary.

The prisoner was immediately transferred to another facility.

Sounds as comfy as UK prisons!

  • UXB

Hopefully normality will be resumed to the East of End of London later today when a specialist team from the Royal Engineers, finally dispose of 1000kg bomb and has bought chaos to the Bromley-by-Bow area. The bomb which was found on the 2-Jun has disrupted rail and tub services through out the week.

Major Davis said it was "impossible" to say how many unexploded World War II bombs remained in London. More may be discovered as construction work takes place in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics, he added.

"There might be quite a few more found, and we are prepared to deal with that."

  • Sweep Stake

Lunch time on Friday, already looking forward to the weekend, we have just had a sweep stake for Euro 2008 and I have drawn Holland, quite a strong team but tend to under achieve. Last time I had Greece, at the time I was disappointed but who would have guessed it, they won. So hopefully I came once come out a winner.

The game that should be quite interesting will be France and Italy on 17 June, a repeat of the world cup final with less head butts this time.

  • Euro 2008

I know the domestic football season is over but tomorrow see’s the start of Euro 2008, and no England. I expect the local police forces are rubbing their hands with flee, no drunken English football fans causing trouble, but the local drinking establishments will be feeling a little disappointed that no English fans will be there, after all the average English football spends a fortunate on larger.

I expect it will be a far better tournament without us there.

  • Knife Crime

London Mayor's office has urged schools to install knife "arches" and introduce hand-held scanners to tackle knife crimes among the youth.

Kit Malthouse, the deputy mayor for policing, said the issue was "very sensitive" but it would "make children safer". But a teachers' group warned of "fatal consequences" if school staff were forced to search pupils.

This year 16 teenagers have been killed in London, of which 12 were stabbed.

College of North East London in Tottenham was among the first colleges to install knife arches in 2006 while Merton College in Morden introduced the scanners this February.

John Troake, headteacher for Haling Manor High School, said: "Politicians constantly focus on what's going on in schools and seem to ignore the 19 hours the young people are out in the society."

The National Association of Headteachers' (NAHT) said: "Installing metal detectors in schools would result in staff having to challenge pupils suspected of carrying weapons. This is a high risk area which could result in fatal consequences.

"This new power should not be implemented as most school staff do not have sufficient skill, knowledge and understanding to reduce risks to an acceptable level." It added that safety of staff as well as of students was "paramount" and said schools needed to develop a plan with police to tackle youth crime.

It appears that teachers do want to help society in dealing with knife crime and are against having metal detectors in schools, they seem to forget they are there to educate our children and this must be part of the education they receive.

I did like statement of John Troake though, but he doesn’t live in the real world, kids carry knife on the street and in schools therefore we must have some mechanism for detecting weapons in these areas. Metal detectors are being deployed at tube and rail stations as a deterrent so we must have them in schools as well. One point I do agree with is that is mustn’t be left to teachers. I believe the police should have dedicated teams that randomly visit schools with this equipment. Or we have them in all schools and have security teams in place at each school with the power to search pupils.

  • Friday Once Again

Here we are once again Friday last day of the working week; it seems to have dragged this week, only a few more hours and I be able to go home put my feet and relax for a couple of days.

Have nothing planned tomorrow, but Sunday I am taking Rosemary and the in laws out for Sunday lunch. Sunday also looks like being the best6 day of the weekend, according to the forecast that is.
