  • Time to Go

I have had enough today, been here since 06:45 and I think its time to head off home. Roads are quiet so should be ok.

  • Suffragette - Emily Davison

On this day in 1913 suffragette Emily Davison throw herself in front of the king's horse at the Epsom Derby. She died 4 day days later from her injuries.

In 1906, she joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), founded by Emmeline Pankhurst. Three years later she gave up her job as a teacher and went to work full-time for the suffragette movement. She was frequently arrested for acts ranging from causing a public disturbance to burning post boxes and spent a number of short periods in jail.

In 1909 she was sentenced to a month's hard labour in Strangeways Prison in Manchester after throwing rocks at the carriage of Chancellor David Lloyd George. She attempted to starve herself, and resisted force-feeding. A prison guard, angered by Davison's blockading herself in her cell, forced a hose into the room and nearly filled it with water. Eventually, however, the door was broken down, and she was freed. She subsequently sued the wardens of Strangeways, and was awarded 40 shillings.

  • Bloody Consultants

We have just had some really good news about our project (I think not); the consultants have changed the design, so now we have to send out all the drawings and schedules once again to our suppliers who have to update all their prices (although some are still outstanding). But the best thing is they still want the final price for the project next week. Someone is living in cloud cuckoo land, honestly I think some of these people don’t have a clue on how to run a project.

  • The Weather is Improving

Well, have just finished my lunch and had a quick walk round the local pond, the weather seems to be improving despite my gloomy post about it this morning, lets hope it gets even better.

  • World Environment Day

The boss man has just gone out in his helicopter once again, that’s twice in two days. I’m sure it was very important. A business lunch somewhere in the country, doing a few deals over a bottle of wine hopefully we will get some work out it.

The company has an environmental policy and we like every one in the country trying to reduce our carbon footprint. Once again paying lip service to our own policies.

To cap it all, we have just posted an aricle on the company website, advertising World Environment Day and how we are playing our part. Must be some bodies idea of a joke.

  • Mugabe Unrepentant

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe defended his agricultural policies on Tuesday against widespread accusations that he was pushing a country once known as the breadbasket of Africa into starvation.

"My country's primary agriculture policy objective remains that of ensuring national and household food security through our own production," he said in a speech to a UN food summit in Rome, where he was snubbed by many participants.

Most Western representatives at the summit said they would have no contact with Mugabe. Some expressed outrage that he was allowed to attend a summit on a global crisis of soaring food prices and shortages, given that many blame him for plummeting farm production in his own country.

  • Training

Sometimes I despair at the training regime of this company, on the 1-Jan-08 a new edition of the Wiring Regulations came into force. For those who don’t have clue what I am on about don’t worry, it’s not important what the regulations are, just the training courses to bring the engineers and tradesman up speed on the latest regulations.

A senior engineer was tasked to arrange training for everybody who required it. Six months down the line nothing seemed to have been done about it. So being a conscientious engineer I decided to take matters into my own hands and arrange my own training, I submitted the correct forms to the training department, who found and booked me onto a course. Now, before I attend and payment is made the course needs to be authorised by a senior manager.

The senior manager would not authorise the course saying that training is being arranged but no dates have been issued as to when this training will be carried out. The company I work for prides it self on training and educated its employees. But to me it just seems like paying lip service to it aims in the company policy document.

If training is to be arranged for personnel why does a senior engineer have to do it, we have a training department dedicated to doing just that. What’s more galling is that the engineer tasked is about as much good as the following.

    1. Concrete parachute
    2. Chocolate kettle
    3. Ash tray on a motor bike.

Or you could say he’s like a light house in a desert, bright but f*?&king useless.

  • UXB

Flights in and out of London City Airport have resumed after the discovery of a World War II bomb nearby halted services. But passengers have been warned delays will continue into the evening.

The explosive was found in Stratford, east London, in the site for the 2012 London Olympics, on Tuesday afternoon. On Monday, thousands of Tube commuters were delayed when another World War II bomb was found by Bromley-by-Bow station in east London.

Earlier in the day an enforced air exclusion zone was set up and all flights were cancelled, delayed or diverted.

The East end of London was bombed heavily during the war I am sure that a few more unexploded bombs will be found before the construction is complete.

  • Grey & Miserable

Another grey and miserable start to the day, and the rest of the week doesn’t look any better. Where has our summer gone, we have had a few hot days at the beginning of May and that’s it. Let’s hope the rest of summer improves. With August being the best month, that’s when I off on holiday to the Lake District.

  • Mittwoch

Wednesday once again and I always start counting down to the weekend from here, the day, hour and minutes are slowly ticking away and before we know it, it will be going home on Friday.

I managed to contact all the companies we have enquirers with yesterday and they promised me that al quotations will arrive on time, I bet still have to ring them later just to remind them.

I like Wednesday, its my favourite working day of the week, I think it dates back to when I was in the army, every Wednesday was a sports afternoon, organised sports football, rugby were available and of course you got to finish early, thus breaking up the week. Great for moral and fitness and everybody had to take part no excuses. Yep, Wednesday was great, now I have to work for a living I and in civilian life we don’t have sports afternoon, shame! I’m sure it would go down well with the work force except senior managers of course.
